Dear Editor,

Is it just me or doesn’t it seem like a majority of the topics and subject matter discussed at the Gilroy Unified School District Board meetings turn into heated debates? The most recent issue to arise dealt with the selection of a new board member to fill a vacancy. The heated debate that now lingers on is whether or not the selection was partly based on race and ethnicity. Unfortunately some people were misunderstood and feelings were hurt.

There was a better and simpler method in selecting a new board member. I have two suggestions on how to select a new board member if such a vacancy occurs again. First, appoint the candidate that had the next highest vote count from the last school board election. Second, hold a simplified special election. Write the name of your favorite candidate on a ballot slip and place it in a ballot box. To ensure a person only votes once, have them dip their finger in purple dye. Either of these two methods would eliminate present board member favoritism. If policy needs to be changed on how to fill a vacancy, change it and let’s stop all the finger pointing.
