Ted Hewitt seems destined for a life in politics.
He has always liked history. He’s considering getting a law degree one day. And he was the Gilroy High School student representative last year when garlic town found itself in the national spotlight over honors courses.
This fall, the honor student will head off for Claremont McKenna College in Southern California to study political science. It’s no accident Hewitt’s new school specializes in government and economics.
“I’ll probably get involved with politics one day. But to run for office you have to be an extrovert,” Hewitt says. “So, I might rather work behind the scenes.”
Hewitt has plenty of time to develop an extroverted personality – plenty of time and plenty of genuine chances playing the trumpet, his instrument of choice since the fifth grade.
Hewitt is a four-year member of the GHS band and played the last two years in the school’s jazz band as well. Outside of school Hewitt used his talents to play in a skaw band with friends. Hewitt will exercise his oratory skills at Friday’s graduation ceremony. He has been named as one of two class salutatorians.
One of his fondest memories of Gilroy high will be the dedication of his teachers, “especially at the (Advanced Placement) level,” and his music teacher Joey Fortino, Hewitt said.
