GILROY – The Economic Development Corporation has announced its upcoming seventh annual “Educator of the Year” award. The award is designed to recognize an outstanding individual who has made a significant contribution within the educational community of Gilroy. Any person who has been involved with the public/private educational arena for at least one year is eligible.
The award will go to the individual who has demonstrated exceptional motivational skills with measurable results, demonstrated innovation in program development and implementation and has received recognition and respect of peers and/or student body.
The recipient of the award will be honored and receive a $1,000 check.
Nomination forms are available at Gilroy schools, the Gilroy EDC office, 7471 Monterey St., or by calling 847-7611. All nominations must be received by Nov. 7.
Grab up church goodies
GILROY – St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, located at the corner of Broadway and Wayland streets, hosts its second-annual “Christmas Arts and Crafts Fair” on Friday, Nov. 7, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday, Nov. 8, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Hand-crafted items such as jewelry, pottery, stained glass art, crocheted gifts, dolls and more will be available for purchase. St. Stephen’s ladies will host a country store featuring home-made salsa, breads and other goodies. Lunch, including hot dogs, chili, corn dogs, nachos and soft drinks, will be offered from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Free to the public. Details: 842-4415.
Gamble for Gilroy youths
GILROY – The Rotary Club will host “Casino Night” Saturday, Nov. 8, at the Portuguese Hall, 250 Old Gilroy St. Eat a steak dinner and help Gilroy’s youth at the same time. GILROY – Solis Winery, 3920 Hecker Pass Highway, is hosting a weekend of cheese and wine pairing, featuring its 2001 Chardonnay Estate, barrel tasting and pre-release wine on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 8 and 9, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. Enjoy a sampling of imported and domestic cheese.

Antique book sale
MORGAN HILL – The Friends of the Morgan Hill Library will sponsor a sale of old and rare books on Saturday, Nov. 8, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., in the Morgan Hill Library, 17575 Peak Ave. at West Main Avenue. Choose from all types of fiction and nonfiction books, including art and architecture, poetry, scientific and technical, first editions, autographed, leather-bound sets and more. Knight dance
MORGAN HILL – Morgan Hill Knights of Columbus announces a “Fall Festival Dance” on Saturday, Nov. 8, at the St. Catherine Parish Center, 17400 Peak Ave. The evening will include a silent auction held from 6 to 8 p.m., a social hour from 6 to 7 p.m., dinner from 7 to 8 p.m. and dancing to the music of Juz Cuz from 9 to 11 p.m. Free child care provided. Bring your own clean bottles or buy them from the winery. The winery’s winemaker has put together a delicious blend of red wines called Cavalcade Cellar Red, exclusively available for Bottle Your Own customers. Cost is only $5 per 750 milliliters.

Intrigue the fashion senses
SAN JOSE – Bellarmine College Preparatory will hold “Invitation to Intrigue,” its 49th Annual Mothers’ Guild Fashion Show for financial aid, on Friday, Nov. 7, at the Fairmont Hotel, 170 South Market St. A noon luncheon will be followed by a 1:15 p.m. fashion show, and a 6:30 p.m. cocktails-and-dinner event followed by a 7:15 p.m. fashion show. The money raised will go to helping students who may otherwise not be able to attend college preparatory schools such as Bellarmine; last year’s gala contributed more than $176,000 toward the education of more than 200 qualified students requiring financial aid.
Luncheon tickets are $80 per person. Dinner tickets are $135 per person and the evening (black-tie optional) gala will include dancing to the Garage Band.
