Lady sticks crush S. Catalina 8-0 to remain atop T-CAL
MONTEREY – Sophomore Karlie Sandoval’s six-assist performance combined with junior captain Elena Ramirez’s hat trick led the Gilroy High field hockey team to an 8-0 road victory over Santa Catalina.
The Lady Mustang stickhandlers upped their first-place league mark to 9-1-1 with only one home game remaining Thursday against North Salinas before they are officially crowned T-CAL Champions.
Gilroy scored four goals in each half – peppering the net with 22 shots compared to just two shots from Santa Catalina. The Lady Mustangs generated 13 short corners – converting on one.
In the first half, Karlie Sandoval assisted on all four goals, starting with a feed to her sister, Jessica Sandoval, and then setting up teammates Jeanelle Perez, Amanda Cooper, and Ramirez.
In the second half, senior Jackie Jarrell – who was given Gilroy’s stick of the game – scored off a feed from Ramirez via Perez. Senior Tracy Link then found the back of the net from K. Sandoval via freshman Erin Magill. Ramirez finished off the scoring with two straight strikes with K. Sandoval assisting the first and Crystal Quintanar assisting the second.
