Can’t believe it’s been a year since our first live shoot. One year ago Saturday, CMAP was without a channel and barely had equipment, but we managed to gather up enough cameras and talent to produce six hours of live coverage on Hollister’s Channel 17. The four CMAP staffers were just itching to get out of the office and into the community to do a live shoot, and what better way to kick off our coverage than with the Rally!

This weekend, we’re at it again; and this time, cable subscribers in Gilroy, Hollister and San Juan Bautista can witness the fun live on Public Access Channel 20, Saturday and Sunday from noon to 3 p.m.

Our Staff Producer W. Clay has put together quite a line up, complete with live hosts Rob Campbell and Liz Crane, and guests like Councilmen Tony Bruscia and Rob Scattini. Our remote teams will be covering the ever popular tattoo contest, burn out contest, and fire dancers. Rumor has it that we’ve secured interviews with a few of the bands, including rock veteran Pat Travers and the bad girls of AC/DShe. Gotta love that name.

One remote team is being driven down San Benito Street in a sidecar, thanks to biker Bob Poelker. Another will be shooting a segment at the Wall of Death, and catching the arm wrestling contest. These segments will be rolled in through the live coverage on Saturday and Sunday.

Many thanks to HIRC Executive Director Bob Beals for working with CMAPers in getting a space situated for our crews – and another BIG shout out to Mr. Jerry Harris, Charter technical guru extraordinaire, for working with us in providing a live feed.

On to other fun programming Gotta love doing a cooking show in the studio. The crew goes mad trying to focus on directing, panning and tilting cameras, and getting good audio levels, while tantalizing scents from the studio’s stove are wafting through the air vents. The crew is left counting the minutes until the show is over so that they can dive in to the delectable dishes prepared by the on camera chefs.

Such was the case a week ago, when the dynamic duo SakaBozzo graced us with their presence in the CMAP studios, complete with hot plates, hot sausages, and of course, garlic. The pair shared three recipes, including one premiering at Gourmet Alley this year, the garlic stirfry. Our hearts skipped a beat when they explained the art of perfecting garlic bread, as they melted an entire cube of butter in a frying pan “Julia Child style” and dipped half a loaf in the pool of lard. Mid-shoot, my camera people needed bibs.

After the show, Sam and Gene graciously shared the goodies with our crew while we broke down the gear. A good time was had by all, and our viewers get to reap the benefits! Check out “Garlic Fest Highlights” on Channel 20 on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. (hey – that’s right before live rally coverage!), and Monday at 9 p.m.

You’re gonna wish you had smell-o-vision.
