New school breaks ground on May 28

Trustees set the date for the groundbreaking at the district’s newest school, and classified employees announced a “work-to-rule” tactic aimed to encourage the board to give them a greater salary increase.
School board members on May 28 will break ground for Antonio Del Buono Elementary at Wren and Farrell avenues.
Beginning next school year, a group of five classes will be located at Las Animas School to serve as a starting point for Del Buono, and the classes, along with their teachers, will move to the school when it is scheduled to open in July 2000.
During the meeting’s public comment period, classified employee representatives announced a “work-to-rule” tactic, beginning May 10. They will begin work exactly when their workday starts and will end exactly at the time they are scheduled to finish. They will perform only those duties in their job descriptions, and will not volunteer to help out at any functions, and they will only work more If they are given advanced written notice and get paid at the appropriate rate could have an effect on the schools. For example, if a school secretary is scheduled to end work at 4:30 1).m., he or she will do so, whether or not there are students in the office.
The only employees who do not have to follow the work-to-rule are bus drivers and dispatchers. The classified employees and the school district have declared an impasse in their negotiations, which means they will go to a state-provided moderator for assistance.
The purpose of the tactic is to get the school district to offer a larger salary increase. The district has offered a 2 percent increase plus an increase in salary ranges for eight different jobs. It also proposed to bring longevity pay down to be equal to the majority of districts in the area.
The classified employees are asking for an increase of 5.5 percent.
