Gilroy – The Gilroy-based Hammerhead triathlon team keeps getting better. In the team’s most recent race, Sunday’s Silicon Valley Kids’ Triathlon, three of four Hammerheads placed in the top 10 in their age group, with Kooper Knutson leading the way with a second-place finish out of 55 11-year-old boys in the race.
In just their second triathlon following last month’s Wildflower Kids’ Triathlon, two of coach Cristin Reichmuth’s charges improved their placings among their age group competitors. Knutson, who fell after crashing his bike at the Wildflower on his way to an injury-hampered finish, had the most marked improvement. Also impressive was Patrick Elkerton, 13, who went from 14th in his age group to 6th in a field of 21 competitors.
Patrick’s sister Kimberly Elkerton, 10, had finished third at the Wildflower to top the Hammerheads. She ended up a still very impressive fifth out of 98 competitors at the Silicon Valley event. Emma Ball, 11, was 10th at the Wildflower and wound up in 31st place at Sunday’s race.
