The following organizations and individuals deserve either CHEERS or JEERS this week:
CHEERS: For all the generous Gilroyans who have donated a turkey or canned foods to our local agencies that feed the hungry. Skip a couple of lattes, gather up your spare change, bring your child and make a generous donation. “There but for the grace of God go I,” is something we should not just think, but act on.
JEERS: For the string of dryer fires at Gilroy Foods which are taxing our city fire department. Five fires since Aug. 23 is excessive. Sunday, the fire crews spent five hours at the plant putting out the stubborn embers. Gilroy Foods needs to get a handle on its equipment and safety program before a huge fire breaks out and a tragedy occurs.
CHEERS: For Ethan Stocks, UCLA and GHS graduate, who is the new instructor leading the Gilroy High School theater arts program. There is great talent and support in this community for the theater arts. The program, sadly, has been allowed to wither, but Stocks has a plan and the energy to restore it to past glory. That would be great for our students and our community.
JEERS: For the news that the stretch of Highway 152 from U.S. 101 to the Don Pacheco Y is going to get worse before it gets better. In 2006, a signal light at the Gilroy Foods entrance and a wider road will ease congestion and danger, but until then it’s going to be a mess with the traffic continuing to increase and the construction beginning in the not too distant future.
CHEERS: For the inaugural Poppy Jasper Film Festival in Morgan Hill last weekend. Great execution on a wonderful idea. This could be South Valley’s next great event.
