GILROY – It was the day before the start of the Lunar New Year when Hai Tran discovered that someone had stolen $40,000 worth of doors, windows and other merchandise from behind his 5-Day Furniture Warehouse.

“I don’t care!” Tran said with a laugh Wednesday, New Year’s Day in China, Korea and his native Vietnam. “The hell with it! It’s bad luck from the last year. Let it go!”

The stolen goods had been left behind Tran’s 162,000-square-foot warehouse at 500 E. Luchessa Ave., waiting to be shipped to his new furniture store in Santa Clara. Since the goods were not indoors when they were stolen, they aren’t covered by Tran’s insurance, he said.

Tran said the thief or thieves cut a locked chain that was hanging across the entrance to the parking area behind the store, put there so unauthorized people could not drive vehicles back there.

Tran reported the theft to Gilroy police at 3:15 p.m. Wednesday. There are no suspects.

Tran also owns the Designer Furniture Warehouse, a retail store at the corner of Monterey and Tenth streets which he opened in the fall. He said he is looking to open a fourth location in Morgan Hill sometime in the near future.
