DEAR EDITOR:

We wish to add our voices to the chorus of concern arising as a result of the important questions posed by dismissed teacher Kristen Porter. We want Gilroy Unified School District leaders to answer her questions, and we want GUSD to define clearly and make public their criteria for hiring and retaining both temporary and permanent teachers and evaluating tenured teachers.

In addition, we call on GUSD principals to abandon the hidden, long-standing practice of harassing teachers who are judged to be solid performers but who decline to strive to become part of the social elite of their school. We call also for reform in the way principals are assigned to their schools.

Currently a principal can serve a school for many years. This fosters an unhealthy feeling of privilege and favoritism between teachers and parents. We suggest the healthier practice (followed by some schools in southern California) of reassigning principals every five years.
