San Martin will soon get a new community-built playground at 12415 Murphy Ave.
San Martin Lions Club is seeking 125-plus volunteers and supplies for the project that will be built during one single day by the sweat of volunteers’ labor.
Sponsored by PG&E and nonprofit KaBOOM!, the community is encouraged to help provide more safe places for children to learn and grow.
Lions Club members wrote in an email that the playground design was been chosen using ideas of neighborhood children.
“On June 7—Community Build Day—200 volunteers will work together with Pacific Gas and Electric Company and KaBOOM! to build our dream playground in only six hours,” wrote Secretary & Playground Build Chair Jayme Simmons.
A ribbon cutting ceremony is slated for June 7. Club members were preparing the site for the new equipment as of press time.
According to Simmons, years of research have shown that outdoor play spaces produce healthy, imaginative, respectful and sociable children, in addition to providing a safe place for children to learn and grow. She wrote that when a new playground is built by the community, not only is the space transformed but so are the people who made it possible. Volunteers and donors walk away knowing they have contributed to a play space that will make a difference every day for the children and families in the neighborhood.
Pacific Gas and Electric Company has generously underwritten the majority of the project, with the remaining cost being raised by the San Martin Lions Club.
“The new playground will be built by Lions and our local community, for children and families who really need it, and we want you to join us,” Simmons said.
