Morgan Hill – Less than 48 hours after a mountain lion was spotted lounging next to a residence in the hills west of Morgan Hill, another bold cougar was seen relaxing at the eastern fringes of the city limits.
El Toro Brewery owner Geno Acevedo confronted the big cat Thursday morning, and while it strolled away as he approached, it did not seem to be afraid, said Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Lt. Dale Unger.
The cat, which was described as a “juvenile” weighing about 60 pounds, was lying under a beer delivery truck at the brewery on Hill Road east of U.S. 101.
“When the owner approached with a pipe, it didn’t display any fear, it just walked away,” Unger said.
The mountain lion seen Tuesday near the Chesbro Reservoir also appeared to nonchalantly observe efforts to scare it off, finally strolling away after Sheriff’s Office Deputy Gerhard Wallace arrived at the residence.
No one was injured in either sighting, and deputies did not have to use rubber bullets to chase the mountain lions away.
Unger said his concern is that the animals seem unusually tolerant of people, and that they are penetrating into areas that, while technically rural, are shoulder-to-shoulder with residential neighborhoods.
