No plans for downtown police beat

Police responded to an alleged drive by shooting of a heavyset man riding his bike southbound on Hanna Street and Gurries Drive Wednesday at 7:53 p.m.

Because the victim and the suspects fled the scene before police responded, reports of the incident are sparse. Both the victim and the suspects are unknown to police at this time, according to a Gilroy Police Department dispatcher.

According to witness statements, the suspects drove a dark-colored vehicle and fired five to seven shots at the bicyclist, who witnesses say was a middle-aged Latino man who weighed about 260 pounds.

Police are unsure if the shooting was gang related.
