Traffic light progress
“Just a quick question about the traffic lights at El Roble School. They spent so much time and money to put those lights in and for the past couple weeks they’ve been blinking red. Umm, are they ever going to be just regular street lights where you have a yellow light and a green? Those crossing guards are having to cross kids through traffic. I go through there everyday, people speed through and I just don’t understand why those lights are blinking red.”
“I’m calling because I was wondering why the lights at the corner of Third Street and Wren Avenue near El Roble school are flashing red? They worked all summer to try and get them done before school got started and then all of sudden when school got started they were working, then they weren’t working and now they are flashing red. Just wondering when they are going to get that fixed thank you.”
Red Phone:
Red Phone got an update on this traffic light debacle from city engineer Don Dey.
“We made all of the construction improvements, put the traffic signals in and now have a burn-in period for the signals to check for problems. It turned out there were wiring problems and now the engineer has to go in and correct this problem,” he said.
Dey agreed that it’s been awhile and that originally, the contractor rushed to get it finished.
“Trying to get contractors to finish up projects at this time of year with vacation is hard, but we hope to get it ready by the middle of January.”
Once the wiring is redone, a standard set of inspections remain, similar to when the problem was first discovered. Once tests are completed and the lights work safely and properly, it will finally become a real traffic light.
why the long wait?
“There’s a problem with the crosswalk lights leaving the Gilroy train station. It does not work properly and therefore after a long wait, cars decide to pull off and find another exit from the parking lot from the train station or just to cross the intersection on a red light. This has been going on for weeks.”
Red Phone:
Thank you for the warning good caller, no one wants to encourage red light running, so Red Phone contacted city engineer Don Dey to make him aware of this situation.
“We’re checking the light at Monterey and Seventh, and if that’s not it we will continue down to Eighth and Monterey. Sometimes it could be the typical problems like someone pressing the crosswalk button and then leaving, causing a delay, or it could be a problem with the timer, whatever it is, we will be looking into it,” Dey said.
