Managers take home degrees in hamburgerology
Gilroy – Two local McDonald’s store managers have earned bachelor’s degrees in Hamburgerology from Hamburger University in Oak Brook, Ill. Carmen Jimenez, manager of the First Street McDonald’s restaurant, and Luis Martinez, manager of the Gilroy Outlet’s restaurant, both returned home this week after spending the last week studying the fine art of restaurant management, team building, and leadership.
“Both Carmen and Luis started as crew members, and they’ve advanced to leadership roles at their respective restaurants,” said Jan Peat, who owns and operates the Gilroy McDonald’s with her husband, Steve.
Hamburger University students can earn credit toward a college degree through their course work. The American Council on Education has recommended 100 percent of the restaurant manager and mid-management curriculum for college credit – a total of 46 credits. Recognized as college-level coursework, McDonald’s training for managers is eligible for credits that can be transferred to colleges and universities – both public and private – and applied toward a two- or four-year degree.
“Every manager at each of our seven locations in Gilroy and Santa Cruz County – as well as Sam Boun, our operations supervisor – started as crew members at McDonald’s restaurants,” added Steve Peat. “In fact, I started my own career with McDonald’s as a crew person when I was just 17. There are certainly great management opportunities for the right people, and we’re always on the lookout for potential in our crew. We recognize the value and importance of developing talent.”
More than 5,000 students attend Hamburger University each year, and since its opening in 1961, more than 80,000 McDonald’s restaurant managers, mid-managers and owner operators have graduated from the facility.
