GILROY

The man who robbed a north Gilroy bank Tuesday afternoon using a nylon stocking to obscure his face could have an accomplice, police said.

About 4:50 p.m. Tuesday, a man walked into Union Bank of California near the intersection of First Street and Wren Avenue and pointed a black semi-automatic-style handgun at tellers, police said. The man had the tellers empty a cash drawer and put the cash into a black, rectangular duffel bag. He then ran out of the bank and hopped into the driver’s seat of an aqua-colored two-door sedan and sped away northbound on Wren Avenue.

Police are hunting a white man, between 5-feet-9-inches and 6-feet tall, about 200 pounds with a stocky build. Witnesses estimated the man to be between 20 and 30 years old and said he wore a blue baseball hat, blue hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans, none of which had any emblems or words on them.

During the robbery, the man wore a nylon stocking over his head, but witnesses said they thought he was wearing glasses underneath. The man also wore light covered gloves.

Witnesses described the car as possibly a 2005 Ford or a Toyota from 1997, 1998 or 1999.
