Dear Editor,

The Gilroy Unified School District Board made a good decision by not allowing the Gilroy High School cheerleaders to travel to Hawaii.

I am a firm believer that there is a lot more to learn than what goes on in the classroom, but I also believe that a trip to Hawaii is not the best learning experience. The money used to send the cheerleaders could be better spent on more meaningful field trips that will impact a greater amount of students – even if the trip was to be paid for by the students or their families.

The board made a commitment to limiting non-academic field trips that will require students to miss multiple days of school, and they are upholding that decision. I am sympathetic to those cheerleaders who planned on attending, but all learning was not spared.

These cheerleaders have learned a life lesson: you do not always get what you want. I encourage these cheerleaders to take a political stance, if they so choose to, and speak against those board members who did not support their Hawaiian vacation. I’m sure this will be a much more educational experience – and you won’t have to miss one day of school.
