Dear Editor:

This is in regards to emergency calls made from cell phones within the Gilroy city limits. I believe that the citizens of Gilroy would be better served by programming 842-0191 (Gilroy PD dispatch emergency) in their cell phones and use that number for any EMERGENCY ONLY calls within Gilroy city limits.

The reason is that cell phone 911 calls are answered by a California Highway Patrol dispatcher who (depending on the amount of 911 traffic at the time) could be as far away as the north Bay Area. He/she must then determine the callers location and then contact Gilroy and pass them the information.

Calling Gilroy PD direct should speed up the response time and avoid possible confusion caused by relaying the call.

This information has been confirmed by Gilroy PD.
