GILROY – Coach John Lango’s Gavilan Rams will try to snap a three-game losing streak to Contra Costa College Saturday at 7pm when the Comets come to town to play at Garcia-Elder Sports Complex in a non-Coast Conference football game.

The Comets, a Bay Valley Conference member, will bring a 0-4 record, having given up at least 61 points in three of four starts. Contra Costa dropped a 35-21 contest to Hartnell two weeks ago, then fell to Coast Conference member DeAnza 61-28.

“We need to show some progress, finish a game and get a win,” said Lango of the 1-2 Rams.

Gavilan had a bye last week, allowing lingering injuries time to heal and the coaching staff time to add some new wrinkles to the Rams’ offensive and defensive schemes.

“Contra Costa has a lot of team speed,” said Lango. “They have several quality sophomores at skill positions.”

“We’re a very young team,” said Contra Costa coach John McDermott. “Our quarterback, Royce Hughes, is a sophomore and has played very well for us. Our top offensive players are wide receivers Alberto Johnson and Deonta Allen. Playing Gavilan will be a good test for us. We always seem to match up well.”

This will be the fifth game against Contra Costa for Lango, now in his ninth year as head coach. The Rams defeated the Comets 37-27 in his first season, 2000. Contra Costa answered with wins the next three meetings, 41-23 in 2001, 19-14 in 2006 and 20-17 in 2007.

Hughes has thrown for four touchdowns and 789 yards. Gavilan’s quarterback duo of Nick Kalantari and Connor Farotte have covered 607 yards and four TDs in three games.

Gavilan completes the pre-Coast Conference portion of the schedule on Saturday Oct. 11 at Sacramento City College.
