Though worst is over, forecasters predict cool temperatures and
showery weather through Friday
Gilroy – Local residents can expect a dreary week of rain showers, though the worst of the bad weather was expected to hit Monday night.

A quarter inch of rain fell by Monday afternoon and forecasters expected another inch and a half over night.

“You’re looking at cool, showery rain through Friday,” said Steve Anderson, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Monterey. “We’ll see some sun and clouds but it’ll definitely be cooler.”

Temperatures will hover in the mid-50s this week after a high Monday of 68 degrees, he predicted. The city has seen about .75 inches of rain in February, three inches shy of its annual average for the month. The season total of 4.26 inches is slightly below average, according to Anderson.

High winds posed a bigger flood threat than rain for the areas creeks, according to Mike Di Marco, spokesman for the Santa Clara Valley Water District.

“These big trees can get knocked down and if one goes across a creek at a strategic location it could cause flooding,” Di Marco said. “Just to be safe, we have our crews out.”

The storm is part of a system hitting all of California, with the worst weather headed for northern California and the Sierras, where six feet of snow is expected.
