DEAR EDITOR:
The Gilroy Branch of the American Association of University Women is proud to announce their endorsement of Measure I, the bond measure to equalize the facilities available at all Gilroy Schools, rebuild Eliot and Las Animas Schools and build Phase I of a second high school.
Many of our members are parents and teachers who know first hand the condition of Gilroy schools. We believe strongly that improved facilities are conducive to better achievement in the classroom.
Our endorsement also supports our national and California Public Policy Action priorities for 2001-2003. These priorities include “Adequate and equitable funding for quality public education for all students.”
Many Gilroy schools are older buildings which have suffered through years of wear and tear. Most have no lunchrooms or multi-purpose rooms for groups larger than one class. About 30 percent of our classrooms are portables, some of which should have been retired years ago. Our high school is overcrowded. All of our children and teachers deserve adequate facilities which are comfortable and lead to increased learning.
Better facilities will show that education is a priority in Gilroy. We urge approval of this important bond issue to invest in our future.
Thank you.
Carol Smith, Gilroy, on behalf of the Presidential Council of the Gilroy AAUW Branch
