MORGAN HILL – The Live Oak stocks hit rock bottom last year, but this year many are expecting a bull market. There may be even enough left over to invest in some Central Coast Secition playoff stock.
The Acorns have been on the downswing of the curve the last couple years, but should begin to be able to climb out with the normal fluctuations of the chart.
A strong offseason training program should be a big influence on the team this year. Former Acorn Jeff Ulbrich and 49er teammate Bryant Young showed the young Live Oak players just what it means to work hard. Both players trained with the Live Oak football team this summer.
Coach Glen Webb is known for doing the unexpected on the football field to gain the extra yards or pick up that first down even if is unconvental like a third down punt.
Webb has a few more options this year by having capable players at quarterback and the meat on the line to protect them.
Fans will again see players lining up in unexpected spots and passes from a receiver, who is actually just as good at quarterback.
Steve Conner is listed as the No. 1 quarterback, but converted offensive lineman Jonathan Redmond and Cody Welch could also see time there.
“There is still a healthy competition for starting possitions,” Webb said.
There is a handful of strong JV players coming up like Andrew Cummins, who played quarterback last year, but will concentrate on defense this year.
Fosusing on the team rather than on the individual will help the team go a long ways, Webb said.
“This has really been a good group to work with,” Webb said. “I don’t want to single anyone out at this point because we’ve been trying to emphasize the team aspect. Some teams take to that more than others. And this seems to be one of those teams that’s taken to it quite a bit.”
“There is good commaradarie even though there is still good competition,” Webb added. “We are moving a few players around in different possitions to try to fortify the ranks a little bit. The kids have taken to that well and have been eager to help out the team in whatever possition they find themselves in.”
Coaches and players were excited about their performance after a preseason scrimmage at San Benito High.
“There is definitely a cause for optimism,” Webb said after watching the scrimmage. “But we still have a lot of work to do.”
