Gilroy – Head downtown Friday evening after the Garlic Festival for the Fifth Street Live Music Series, at Fifth and Monterey streets. Rhythm and blues singer John Garcia plays tonight.

As a professional singer and guitarist for the past 30 years, Garcia has performed with John Lee Hooker, B.B. King, Johnny Winters, Paul Simon and Huey Lewis. As a blues guitarist, there are few his equal. Enjoy an evening of rhythm and blues and local wines from 7 to 9pm under the stars.

Gilroy Gardens’ Summer Safari

Gilroy – Guests can now experience some of California’s most interesting and exotic native wild animals at Summer Safari: Predators and Prey, at Gilroy Gardens.

The event is free with park admission, and features a variety of nature’s predators and prey. Guests are able to get close to the animals and learn about each animal’s habitat, role in the food chain, and other characteristics. The live animal exhibit runs for five weeks, through Aug. 29, and features a black bear, mountain lion, lynx, deer, vulture, king snake and more.

Republicans Meet Thursday

Gilroy – Conservative Republicans and others are invited to attend the monthly meeting of the California Republican Assembly at 7pm Thursday. Meet at the Church of the Valley, 13380 Depot St., San Martin.

The objective of the local CRA chapter is to raise political sophistication and keep abreast of politics in the state and country. Guest speaker will be Ram Singh.

PCAG Meets in August

San Martin – The Perchlorate Community Advisory Group meets from 2 to 4pm Friday, Aug. 3, at the San Martin Lion Club Hall, 12415 Murphy Ave. (across from the airport) in San Martin.

A second meeting will be held from 7 to 9pm Thursday, Aug. 30 at the same location.
