Agnes Elia passed away in Gilroy on Feb. 1, 2003.
She is the wife of the late, Joseph C. Elia. Mrs. Elia is survived by her children and their spouses, Robert and Linda Elia, Kathy and Phill Laursen and Gary and Diane Elia all of Gilroy; and her grandchildren, Stephen Elia of Hollister, Michael Elia of Galt, Jeffrey Elia, Lisa, Jennifer and Kristin Laursen, Janina and Jared Elia also from Gilroy. She is survived by her sister Nelda Duplissie of Fresno. Mrs. Elia is also survived by six great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews as well as her wonderful caretaker Andy.
A native of Tonitown, Ark., Mrs. Elia was 87 years old. She moved to Gilroy over 60 years ago where she met and married Joseph her husband in 1938. They were happily married until his death in 1973. Agnes and Joe owned several businesses in Gilroy, including Elia’s Barber Shop, the Red and White Store, and Ermenia’s Beauty Salon. She was a former member of the VFW Auxiliary Women’s Marching Unit and a longtime member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Gilroy.
Agnes loved to garden, sew and build bird houses. Her pride in life was her family. She gained great pleasure from passing on traditions like cooking gnocchi and baking biscotti her two specialties. Memorial Mass will be held on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at St. Mary’s Church, Gilroy. Habing Family Funeral Home, Gilroy, directing. Family would appreciate donations to your favorite charity in her memory.
