DEAR EDITOR:

My name is Victoria Galat, I am 10 years old and am in 4th grade at Las Animas. I have written a letter to Superintendent Edwin Diaz but wanted parents and people to know what is going on.

I realize that Mrs. Reyes and Mr. Diaz want Las Animas to focus on our learning and testing. But let’s face it there are other issues for us. I wrote to Mr. Diaz about an issue at my school. The quality of food we get every day. It is really unacceptable and I invited Mr. Diaz to come to my school to have lunch with me one day before school is over.

The food we get at my school is gross. There is very rarely fresh fruit or vegetables served. My little sister got out-of-date milk twice and I gotten apples that are bruised and icky. People have to realize that in order for kids to learn, they have to provide edible food. Food that any grown up would want to be eat. Many days our food is cold or not appealing and so I end up throwing away most of my lunch. You should see how many kids throw out their lunch every day.

I am not concerned for just me but for the other students at my school who also are tired of the food. I have friends that attend another school and they get really good stuff. Green salads, mixed fruit and stuff like that!

With so many news reports talking about children being overweight and unhealthy, then why do we get served unhealthy food? We aren’t given a choice. And there are a lot of kids whose families can’t afford lunches they have no choice, it’s either eat school lunch or don’t eat at all! And what about vegetarians?

I want to challenge our superintendent and others to try to help students at schools like mine making sure we receive food that is nutritious and healthy to eat!
