Andrew Mercer Jr. died Oct. 2, 2002, in Weiser, Idaho.

Andrew Mercer (Big Andy) was born Jan. 4, 1925, in Gilroy to Cleona (Eustice) Mercer and Andrew Mercer Sr., who was a captain in the California Highway Patrol.

Andrew attended Gilroy schools and graduated in June 1943. He spent two years training to be and perform as an aerial gunner and ordinance man on PBM Martin Mariner in the eastern Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico.

On discharge from service in 1946 he went to work at Bege Manufacturing as a machinist then Food Machinery Corp., (FMC), then IMB as a tool and dye maker.

He enjoyed stock car, motorcycle, and go cart racing, and had many trophies.

On retirement he moved to McCall, Idaho, and then bought a small farm at Weiser, Idaho. He continued his joy of racing snowmobiles until mother nature caught up with him. He loved the back country, the mountains and exploring mining camps and woods with his hunting dog (Knipper the white toy poodle). We’ll miss his photos and tales of his trips. He was planning on a trip to the black hills and seeing Mt. Rushmore. In spirit he is still out there exploring and doing his thing.
