With the winds beginning to blow again, Morgan Hill Moms said
goodbye to our own Mary Poppins (aka Ruth Jadeja), whose childcare
abilities are renowned, at a farewell gathering and pottery night
on Friday, Sept. 24 at Glazed Creations in downtown Morgan Hill.
Hosted by Jen Carruba, the guest list included Star McWilliams
(celebrating an under-30 birthday), Nancy Rhoads (no where near
under-30), Mary Lastra, Melanie Saber, Joyce Niehlsen and Leigh
Donaldson all of Morgan Hill as well as Rebecca Santos and Rita
Renner of San Martin.

In town visiting for the event was Ms. Jadeja’s longtime friend and fellow Brit Marion Podolski of San Jose. Artist of the yarn arts and in town for a showing in San Juan Bautista was former Morgan Hill resident Helga Tinnerino of Palm Desert.
Just as shocked at the news of Poppins’ retreat was her mother Iris Sterland of Daventry, England, here on vacation, and the attendee who won the “farthest traveled” award. Mrs. Sterland learned of her daughter’s move at the airport on the way to California. Sterland was assured her semi-annual pilgrimage to Vegas was still on.
The gathering began with a Gewürztraminer aperitif and homemade goodies including a savory Persian-French Salad Olivier prepared by Ms. Saber.
As we reviewed the ingredients with Melanie, she giggled and admitted she had forgotten to add the turmeric and cinnamon. In a friendly banter, someone else admitted to having those C.R.A.F.T. moments lately (can’t remember a [darn] thing!). Go to your happy place.
The banter and taboo subjects of politics and religion made for a lively discussion during decisions about what color palette to choose for one’s pottery project. Mrs. Tinnerino filled us in on German law (her birth country), stating for the record, no German court will grant a couple a divorce after 30 years of marriage. Ms. Lastra looked up from her project and surmised in her pragmatic baritone, “I guess you just suck it up?!”
The one least surprised about the announcement of a move was Marion Podolski, who doesn’t bother buying Poppins goodbye or house-warming gifts anymore. The real estate sign on her friend’s front lawn was described as a “bloody shock!” Podolski stated to Poppins in her Scottish lilt, “I can’t take me eyes off of you for a minute!”
Ms. Jadeja has been the faithful spouse and companion to her entrepreneur husband Prakash soon after they met in Daventry, Northhamptonshire, England.
From there, the couple moved to Windsor in Burkshire (pronounced Barkshire for you Yanks), then to Austin, Texas, (a country of its own), then to Sunnyvale, California, on to Campbell, then back to England (Wokingham), then finally to Morgan Hill.
The couple’s next move is back to Austin, Texas.
The winds of change are hard for those of us who live in this valley and must say farewell to many who have moved on after the downturn.
With a spoon full of curry, Ms. Jadeja’s departure will be tolerated but not forgotten.
Au Revoir Mary Poppins!
Ciao for now.
