SAN MARTIN – A judge set bail at $4 million Wednesday afternoon for Gilroy murder suspect Jesse “Jesus” Eduardo Gill, less than a week after police arrested him for allegedly stabbing another Gilroy man to death.
Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge Edward Lee granted the bail at the 21-year-old Gill’s arraignment hearing at the South County courthouse in San Martin.
According to Gill’s family members, Gill will make bail following his plea hearing scheduled for Tuesday.
Gill is charged with murder for allegedly stabbing 26-year-old El Salvadoran immigrant Wilfredo Coreas more than 20 times on March 6 at Coreas’ apartment at 7190 Eigleberry St. near the corner of Eighth Street.
Coreas was a roommate of Gill’s mother, according to police, but an official motive for the homicide has not been determined. Police said last week that they were interviewing witnesses to the homicide.
“I think it’s unfair that everybody is giving Jesse such a bad name,” said Gill’s cousin Evette Martinez Thursday morning. “He did not do drugs, he had a home, a fiancé with a baby on the way (due in two weeks) and a little girl. He was just happy his baby was coming.”
Martinez also said that Gill worked at the Mexican American Community Services Agency (MACSA), but MACSA officials said they were unaware that Gill worked there.
Martinez said Gill has a juvenile crime record, but because he has stayed out of trouble the last few years Judge Cunningham granted him bail.
