TENNIS: Alisal sweeps doubles play in 5-2 win over Christopher

Though early in the league season, the Christopher High varsity girls basketball team has asserted itself as a contender for the league title come mid-February.

The Cougars took another step in that direction with a 50-35 road triumph over Monterey Bay League opponent Seaside on Thursday night.

Behind 21 points from Hanna Tabron and the feisty defense of senior Haylee Peterson and sophomore Cydney Caradonna, who combined to hold returning all-leaguer Victoria Dorn to five points, CHS (9-4 overall, 2-0 MBL) climbed to a 20-12 halftime lead and used a 19-point fourth quarter to distance itself down the stretch.

Tabron added five assists, six rebounds and four steals to her game-high point total. Caradonna chipped in 10 points five assists five rebounds and four steals.

The win marks the second straight for the Cougars against defending league champions. On Tuesday, CHS toppled North Monterey County, which won the MBL postseason tournament last season. Seaside owned the regular season MBL crown, finished 2010-11 at 11-1 in league matchups.

The Cougars host Pajaro Valley on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

• The junior varsity Cougars won 43-23.
