Bobby Best and three Live Oak players chosen to play in the 32nd
Annual Charlie Wedemeyer All-Star Football Game
Gilroy High’s Bobby Best has been selected to represent the Mustangs in the 32nd Annual Silicon Valley Classic/Charlie Wedemeyer All-Star Football Game Wednesday, July 19. The game will start at 7:30pm at San Jose City College.
Best, a 6-foot-3 250 pound center/defensive lineman who has signed to play for Cal Poly in the fall, will join the South team as it tries to add an 18th overall win against the North squad, which currently holds 12 wins total.
The teams are composed of the best graduating high school football players in the Silicon Valley.
“Bobby is a great defensive lineman. All quarterbacks need to be aware of his ability to break the line and head straight for the sack,” said South head coach Jason Tenner. “He makes a difference when he is out there.”
Live Oak running back Dustin Muhn, linebacker Nathan Goldie, and lineman Jason Romero were also selected to the South squad. Another South Valley player, Valley Christian fullback Travis Nilmeyer, also will play for the South.
Charlie Wedemeyer is a former college football player and was named the Prep Player of the Decade in the 1960’s in Hawaii. He attended Punahou Academy and Michigan State University on athletic scholarships.
In 1977, Wedemeyer was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and given three years to live. He is still alive today and is the founder of the Charlie Wedemeyer Family Outreach. The program’s mission is to fight ALS. He will be at the game to encourage players and show his support for the annual game.
Past stars of the Wedemeyer All-Star game include Jeff Garcia, Jeff Ulbrich, former Arizona Cardinal Pat Tillman, Brent Jones, Carl Monroe and former Dallas Cowboy Doug Cosbie.
Tickets for the 32nd Annual Charlie Wedemeyer All-Star Football Game are $15. All proceeds from the game will benefit the Charlie Wedemeyer Family Outreach and other local charities. For more information about this event, visit www.youthclassic.org.
