Dear Editor:
I read Patricia Ho’s article on the division of local clergy over the gay wedding issue with great interest. I am not surprised that such a lack of unity on the subject exists. I am concerned, however, that the article may lead some to conclude that the Bible is ambiguous on the subject of homosexuality. It is not.
The Bible declares homosexuality, premarital sex and adultery all to be sinful behavior.
The Bible also speaks specifically to the marriage issue. Marriage is to be between one man and one woman for life. This is the clear teaching of Genesis 2:24. Jesus does in fact affirm this clear teaching in Matthew 19:5, as he quotes the Genesis passage almost verbatim.
Especially during times of debate over sensitive issues such as this one, it is important for all Christians to remember that the Lord’s church remains in the position of being charged with the responsibility of lovingly proclaiming the full counsel of God’s Word, the Bible.
That the Bible stands in opposition to homosexuality may be shocking or embarrassing to some, but it is equally important to remember that it also stands in opposition to premarital sex, adultery, drunkenness, and unrighteousness of any kind. This is all part of the Bible’s central message.
In spite of our sin, God loves us and sent His Son Jesus to die as a sacrifice for sin, so that we who believe might become the righteousness of God in Him. It is perhaps not often proclaimed, but entirely true that Christians are not so because of their own personal standards of righteousness, but because of the righteousness of Christ which God applies to the true believer.
