Fighting out of Left to Right Boxing Gym in Gilroy for trainer Jerry Rodriguez, Jackie Gomez, 13, defeated Kyla Sanchez, 14, to claim the 110-pound Novice division championship belt at the Desert Showdown last weekend.
Rodriguez said that about 800 boxers participated in the four-day event.
Ten-year-old Jesus Gomez had an easier road to his belt and was named the unopposed champ at 110.
Noel Temores Jr., 11, fended off five opponents to make it into the 90-pound final where he lost a close decision.
