A tenacious Christopher High boys basketball team defense held visiting Pajaro Valley to single digits in three of four quarters en route to a much-needed 63-44 victory in Monterey Bay League action Wednesday night.
“It was a good win for us,” head coach Kaden Bahner said. “The intensity of the game was good. They played hard.”
The Cougars pounced on the Grizzlies in the first quarter, building an important 19-5 advantage in the opening eight minutes.
“I believe our defensive pressure and full-court pressure at the beginning of the game was the difference,” Bahner said.
The first-quarter cushion proved to be valuable as the Grizzlies put together their best eight minutes of the night, slicing the deficit to just four, 31-27, at halftime.
However, with contributions at the offensive end from all nine Cougars, CHS proceeded to outscore Pajaro Valley 16-9 and 16-8, respectively, over the final two quarters.
“It was just a great team effort,” Bahner said. “All nine kids available to play scored for us. “That’s the first time all year that we can say that, so I was extremely proud of the kids.”
Wyatt Rocheleau posted a team-high 17 points, DJ Campos had 13, Takoda Bowers deposited 10 and Andrew Foster tucked home six points to lead the Cougars’ score book.
Christopher plays at North Monterey County on Friday.
