The following organizations and individuals deserve either CHEERS or JEERS this week:
JEERS: For the Northwest Quad residents who are objecting to the rec/community center included in the plans for Sunset Park. Excuse us, but the entire community pays for our parks – not just “your” impact fees. Our community approved the development, it will support it with police, fire and maintenance services and in return it’s expected that new residents will make an effort to become a part of the community. The city should insistently build the rec center. Fostering a separatist attitude in the Northwest Quad is not a healthy path for our community.
CHEERS: For the news that Gilroy Unified has received a grant for after-school academic enrichment programs at Eliot, El Roble, Glen View and Las Animas elementary schools as well as South Valley Middle School. The program will be able to accommodate at least 80 children per school. That’s quite a few children who will be getting the extra help they need. Great work.
CHEERS: For the city of Gilroy which fired the starting gun Wednesday on the long-awaited firefighter/paramedic program. Firefighters Heinz Mailbaum and Shaun Peyghambary worked the first-ever shift. No emergencies. But that will soon change, and when it does the certified Advanced Life Support firefighters will provide advanced cardiac care, advanced pediatric care hypoglycemia/insulin reaction, i.v. fluids, vascular access (with drugs) and advanced drugs administration all at a trauma scene. That will result in lives saved and a community secure in the knowledge that when there’s an emergency, the best help is nearby.
