The Valley Transportation Authority has said that they will cancel Community Bus Line 17 that goes from the Gilroy Transit Center on Monterey to a Santa Clara County Social Services building on Tompkins Court, unless ridership nearly doubles soon, according to a VTA memo to councilman Perry Woodward.

The VTA had obtained a grant from the Metropolitan Transportation Commission to keep bus line 17 going, and funds were expected to expire by July 2012. But now the VTA is estimating that they will have sufficient funds to operate the route until July 2014.

“At that point, unless the route meets the adopted performance standards, which is highly doubtful, VTA will discontinue this route,” the memo read.

The minimum standard is 15 passengers per hour, and bus line 17 has failed to meet that standard with 9.1 passengers per hour and a daily ridership of 76 over the past 12 months.
