Opening Day at

Great America

Santa Clara – Paramount’s Great America has a special treat for guests this year to kick-off its 29th season. The 9-foot inflatable version of SpongeBob SquarePants will greet guests as he sits high atop the entrance sign to Great America.

SpongeBob is helping kick off two new interactive shows for the entire family, Nickelodeon Live and Meet the Nicktoons.

The wacky and wildly energetic Nickelodeon Live gets families involved in three messy, interactive competitions including a Feeding Baby Game where dads dressed as babies in giant, oversized high chairs have to catch water-filled balloons and feed themselves dessert. Someone from the audience is also going to get “slimed.” (Presented through Aug. 28)

Nickelodeon’s SpongeBob SquarePants, Patrick, Dora the Explorer and their Nicktoon friends come together live in one place in 2005 for Meet the Nicktoons, a half-hour meet and greet where park guests can meet their favorite Nickelodeon friends up close and in person. (Presented at 5pm daily through Aug. 28)

Plus, Great America also offers eight incredible roller coasters, the most kids‚ rides and the most water rides in Northern California and the all-new, three-times larger and wetter Crocodile Dundee’s Boomerang Bay Beach Club (opens May 7).

The park is open from 10am to 6pm and is located at Hwy. 101 and Great America Pkwy. in Santa Clara.

Transmeta reorganizes business, cuts jobs

San Jose – Struggling chip-maker Transmeta Corp. on Thursday announced a major corporate restructuring, a 24 percent reduction in its work force and the hiring of a new chief executive as it tries to survive amid much larger rivals.

Just five years after its public debut at the sunset of the tech boom, the unprofitable maker of low-power microprocessors for notebooks and other computers said it will focus on licensing its technology and intellectual property to other companies.

It will continue to sell some chips but has changed the terms and conditions of its agreements with computer makers. As a result, some have canceled their deals with the Santa Clara-based company.

Transmeta also cut 67 employees, leaving it with 208 worldwide. In addition, it announced the departure of Chief Executive Matthew Perry. Arthur L. Swift was named as his replacement. Swift previously was the company’s senior vice president of marketing.

Transmeta also said it has reached a multiyear agreement with Sony Corp. and Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. to “accelerate and expand” the adoption of the chip maker’s power management technology into Sony products.

Shares of Transmeta jumped more than 16 percent, or 15 cents, to $1.08, in extended-session trading. Earlier they had closed at 93 cents, up 8 cents, in regular trading on the Nasdaq Stock Market.
