More on cats

I wanted to respond about this thing about the cats that roam
this person’s yard in the Saturday, Feb. 11 paper. I’d like to let
him or her know that without the cats, they would have a lot of
mice. That’s their job. It’s to patrol our community and get rid of
the mice. Thanks.

More on cats

“I wanted to respond about this thing about the cats that roam this person’s yard in the Saturday, Feb. 11 paper. I’d like to let him or her know that without the cats, they would have a lot of mice. That’s their job. It’s to patrol our community and get rid of the mice. Thanks.”

Red Phone:

Thanks for the call, though Red Phone is more of a ‘dog person’ and isn’t sure if it would rather have roaming cats or roaming mice. The Red Phone is kidding of course, good readers, so please, no angry calls about its insensitivity.

It would like to add that Dispatch columnist and local vet Pete Keesling recently gave his two cents on the earlier complaint about wandering cats.

Keesling said that many cat owners don’t realize the nuisance their cat causes when it is allowed to wander outdoors nor do they appreciate the dangers their kitty faces.

“There are feral cats everywhere and they carry contagious diseases that can be very serious, even fatal, if passed to another kitty,” he said. “Routine vaccines don’t protect against some of these.”

According to Keesling, many cats dig to cover up their eliminations. He suggests to the previous caller that if cats are digging in a small area in his garden, the caller can bury chicken wire just a few inches under the surface of the soil. Cats that scratch at the ground will catch their claws on this and go somewhere else – hopefully not in the same yard.

Long light

“I live in the area of the new housing off of Church and Farrell and I wanted to complain about the light system at Farrell and Monterey Road. That is unbelievable. That light system has been changed and it’s unbelievably long. Is there any way the city can adjust those lights? Thank you so much.”

Red Phone:

Red Phone touched base with Gilroy Engineer Don Dey, who said the disruption to the traffic signal was caused by the road and utility construction in the area. The construction work cut the traffic sensors, resulting in the signals being placed on recall. According to Dey, when traffic signals are on recall, the signal timing must be set to a fixed amount of green time whether cars are present or not. The roadway construction work is now complete, the sensors have been installed and the signals should be back to normal operation shortly, he said.

Upset over editorial

One caller let the Red Phone have an earful on how angry she was with the weekend Dispatch’s opinion page and the ‘Cheers and Jeers.’ What caught the caller’s attention was the jeer given to the plea bargain made with two accused of vandalizing Antonio del Buono School and the ‘sarcastic’ comment about them being ‘good kids.’ The caller was adamant that the accused vandals are good boys and made a simple mistake.

The Red Phone appreciates the call and the comments, though the Dispatch editorial board respectfully disagrees with the caller.

Red Phone would also like to remind callers that should an opinion really hit a chord and spark an intense reaction as this one did, a letter to the editor is a more appropriate venue in which to vent. Feel free to send your letters to
