San Martin – A fire which destroyed several greenhouses, trailers and several mobile homes is still under investigation more than two weeks after it destroyed the former nursery but spared the property owner’s home.
CalFire Battalion Chief Ken McGeever said an arson investigator was on scene for several days after the July 17 fire but the cause and the cost of the blaze had not been determined.
“At this point, we think we know where the fire started but there are too many possibilities to say how,” he said Monday. “It appears that it started in the northwest corner of the property right by a trailer.”
Though the property owner’s daughter, Donna Alamul, suggested that the fire may have been set by a former tenant of the property, investigators need more than supposition to proclaim the cause arson, McGeever said.
“Arson is a very, very hard crime to prove,” he added.
The fire started at approximately 11:30am, and though firefighters were on scene within minutes, several greenhouses and trailers were already engulfed in flames. Strong winds propelled the flames, spreading the fire quickly throughout the five-acre property. Crews moved to the interior of the property rapidly to defend the home, but could not save the garage.
No one was injured in the blaze.
