Gilroy Police had a successful night with five arrests for drunk driving as part of the DUI checkpoint they conducted on Monterey Road at Howson Street on Friday night.
The checkpoint, which was held from 9 p.m. to 2:30 a.m., screened 402 of the 610 drivers that traveled through the checkpoint. In addition to the five DUIs issued, police gave 35 people citations for driving without a valid license and four citations for driving with suspended licenses.
DUI arrestees:
- Robert Morales, 18 of San Jose, 9:47 p.m. on Aug. 3.
- Omar Aguilar, 22 of Gilroy, 9:47 p.m. on Aug. 3.
- Jacobo Hernandez, 30 of San Martin, 10:41 p.m. on Aug. 3.
- One unnamed driver, arrested at 1:18 a.m. on Aug. 4. (Driver is unnamed because report isn’t finalized, according to Police Sgt. Chad Gallacinao.)
- Johan Sjoden, 18 of Morgan Hill, at 9:56 on p.m. Aug. 3, for having an open container of alcohol in his car and for having a blood-alcohol level of .03.Â

- Colin McKeller, 26 of San Jose, 12:13 a.m. on Aug. 4.

Police briefs: Auto theft, 4-year-old wandering streets
Reyes Valenzuela, 29 of Gilroy, was arrested for commercial burglary and vehicle theft at 12:08 p.m. Aug. 5, when police were dispatched to an alarm at Cali Auto Sales on First Street. Valenzuela was allegedly caught trying to drive away in a blue Ford Truck, property of the car lot. He was arrested for commercial burglary and auto theft and taken to Santa Clara County Jail.

Burglary at the Outlets
Two men and a woman stole $4,535 worth of clothing from Lacoste in the Gilroy Premium Outlets at 11:02 a.m. on Aug. 2, taking several trips out of the store with large booster bags of merchandise. They fled in a blue minivan and remain outstanding.
Missing profit from the Garlic Festival
Police are investigating more than $18,000 in missing profit from the Gilroy Garlic Festival’s ticket sales. After auditing this year’s Garlic Festival profits, festival administration believes that tickets were embezzled at a ticket booth and sold to patrons, and reported the alleged criminal activity to police at 3:30 p.m. on Aug. 3. Police Sgt. Chad Gallacinao would not comment further on the investigation.
4-year-old found wandering on Wren Avenue
At 8:03 a.m. on Aug. 3, police found a 4-year-old girl wandering on Wren Avenue near Wentz Drive, wearing only underwear. The responding officer was aware of at least one other incident where the girl wandered away from home while unsupervised. The child’s address, on the 7300 block of Wren Avenue has had prior disturbances such as domestic violence and mental health calls. Police took the girl into protective custody and contacted Child Protective Services.
Two bulldogs stolen
Two American bulldogs were stolen from their backyard on the 9200 block of Church Street when a suspect cut a chain link fence and took them at 3 a.m. on Aug. 4. The suspect is outstanding. One dog is a brown and white male, and the other one is a white female with a brown pattern on its back.
