Drunk and hot, a father left his 8-year-old son with a bottle of vodka in Las Animas Veterans Park Monday evening and then walked home without his child.
Several people in the park, 350 Mantelli Drive, noticed the abandoned child, who stuck out holding a 750 milliliter bottle of Smirnoff cranberry vodka that still contained some liquid, Sgt. Jim Gillio said. The concerned locals called police and stuck by the child until officers arrived minutes later. Police arrested a “heavily intoxicated” Michael Kelly across the street outside his front porch along Arbor Drive. There, the boy’s mother scolded the 45-year-old as officers arrested him for felony child cruelty, public intoxication and parole violation.
In a separate incident 8 a.m. Sunday, police arrested Jose Farias, 46, of San Jose, for masturbating as he peeked through a fence of a private residence. The female victim noticed Farias and called police – just as happened in another sexual incident last March when police arrested a homeless man in the morning after a woman woke up and noticed him masturbating in her backyard. Afterward, that man admitted to masturbating in Las Animas Park.
In another recent incident, a burglar broke a side window and door into a home’s garage along Plymouth Drive July 9. Once inside, the suspect took only a $1 bill from the kitchen table. The residents were not home, and police did not have a motive.
The next day, a burglar or burglars entered RMC Engineering, 255 Mayock Road, and stole four 55-gallon drums of scrap aluminum and stainless steel worth about $6,500, police said. There were no signs of forced entry and both fences into the property were locked and in tact when police responded the next morning, Gillio said.
