Small Gilroy Quake in Midst of a Northern California Rattling

Gilroy – A small earthquake rattled dishes in Gilroy early Saturday morning during a shaky weekend in Northern California. The magnitude 3.3 temblor was centered 7 miles east of Gilroy, just north of Highway 152 at Soap Lake. The 5:26am quake woke some Gilroy residents, while others snoozed through the single jolt. Gilroy residents weren’t the only ones to shake during the weekend. Following the Gilroy quake, considered “minor,” a total of six other quakes – ranging from micro to minor – shook Northern and Central California, according to U.S. Geologic Survey data.

A trio of micro quakes hit the Northern California coast Sunday. A 2.8 magnitude quake centered offshore about 50 miles southwest of Eureka hit just before 2am, and was followed by another 2.8 shaker at about 10:30am, this time about the same distance from Eureka, but in a southeast direction.

Monday morning, another micro quake hit the same area 50 miles southeast of Eureka at 7am. Closer to the Bay Area, a 2.6 magnitude micro quake struck just before 3am Monday 22 miles north of Santa Rosa.

The weekend swarm continued when a 2.6 micro quake rattled the Central Coast community of Kettleman City at 6:47am Sunday. The Kettleman City quake was preceded by a minor temblor registering 3.1 that was centered about 29 miles north of Mammoth Lakes.

There were no reports of injuries.
