Amelia and Jeromy Mello earned bachelor’s from University of
Phoenix
Gilroy – Although Amelia and Jeromy Mello both attended the same college and worked in the same building, it wasn’t until a graduation ceremony staged by mutual friends, that they learned of one another’s existence.
Four years later the Gilroy couple found themselves at a similar celebration, but this time for their own graduation from the University of Phoenix. The ceremony was staged recently at the HP Pavilion in San Jose.
The two, who just purchased their second home after moving to Gilroy three years ago, each earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Management. Although the couple had already established successful careers in sales, the two wanted to have a diploma to hang on the wall, to set a good example for their future children.
“We just both wanted to have a degree,” Amelia Mello said. “We just thought it would be a positive thing to do to finish together.”
They chose the University of Phoenix because the college, which allows students to earn degrees in the classroom or online, is designed for full-time professionals. For the Mellos, who both worked full-time while earning their degrees, the college’s flexible schedule of evening classes gave them the chance to achieve their goal.
“You can work full-time and still manage to get an education,” Amelia Mello said. “It was a really convenient option because they work around that schedule.”
For Amelia Mello, the packed schedule of full-time work and evening classes, was a perfect match. Since she and her husband were recently promoted to management positions, everyday they were able to apply what they learned in the classroom into the workplace.
“When you can apply them to real life experiences it helps encourage continued learning,” she said. “And when you can do that on a professional level and do that with your husband, it helps the marriage as well.”
