Here’s a sampling of the crime in the Garlic Capital this week:

Fake check bust

A 25-year-old man, Budd Dante of Oakland, attempted to cash a $1,700 fake check at a Wells Fargo bank in Nob Hill on First Street just before 4 p.m. May 16. Bank employees called the police, and the suspect fled prior to police arrival. He proceeded to try to cash the check at the Wells Fargo on 10th Street a few minutes later, where he was subsequently arrested. He was taken to Santa Clara County Jail.

Heroin arrest

Jorge Haro, 48 of Gilroy, a member of a prison release program, was arrested for having tar heroin on his person as well as two needles containing liquefied heroin totaling 3 grams on the 700 block of Sixth Street at 5:33 p.m. May 16. He was taken to Santa Clara County Jail.

Drunk man gets violent

Police were discharged to the 900 block of Monte Bello Drive after receiving calls about a drunk man. Police noticed 18 or more smashed beer cans in an apartment complex parking lot. Emmanuel Fregoso was given a warning by police and he began yelling gang slogans at officers and tried to strike one with his hands. Police released their canine on him and he was treated at a local hospital where he was cleared and subsequently taken to county jail.

Arkansas sex offender

A fugitive from Arkansas was arrested after someone called police about a suspicious man walking in the middle of Chestnut Avenue. Police found that he was wanted for being in violation of his sex offender requirements. He was taken to county jail and will be sent back to Arkansas.
