DEAR EDITOR:
Snow White had seven dwarfs. There are nine Democratic presidential hopefuls. The nine have taken turns saying George Bush is an idiot, stupid, the worst president in history. As an old rocket scientist, let me count the ways:
• Three pieces of major tax cut legislation passed in three years
• Responded to terrorists by engaging in two major wars in three years
• Engineered the largest addition to Medicare ever
• An immense addition to the education bill (with Ted Kennedy)
• Policies that created an 8.2 percent increase in third quarter GDP, largest in 20 years.
• Engaged in nation building in Iraq and Afghanistan.
No president since Harry Truman has accomplished so much in three years. And the Democratic hopefuls philosophy seems to be:
• Vote for wars they believe never should be fought
• The military is overextended – but should be smaller
• Nation Building is always humanitarian – except in Iraq
• President Bush is a manipulating genius – also very stupid
• The French and Germans are always right
• Unilateralism is always wrong – unless we are twisting Israel’s arm
• No child left behind – except in the womb or in an urban public school
• It is evil to be rich – except by marrying money
• Small business is great – unless it is successful then it is evil big business
• Punch cards are a travesty – unless they elect Democrats
• President Bush is irresponsible for creating a $400 billion Medicare package
• President Bush is a tightwad because the Medicare package was not $800 billion
• It is preferable to oust John Ashcroft than to find Osama
• Cede all US power to the UN – elected by???
• Share the cost and responsibility for Iraq with those who have already told us to take a hike
• Talk a lot – do nothing.
Incidentally, the United States’ unilateralism in Iraq was a coalition of more than 30 nations. Gulf War I had 33 nations.
