The Gilroy Demonstration Garden is hosting a Garden Day Camp with various sessions starting next week.

During a “Chefs in the Garden” session from July 12 through July 15, participants will plant a pizza and salsa garden to learn how food grows and make recipes straight from the garden.

A session titled “Bugs, Butterflies and Birds … Oh My!”, which will run from July 19 through 22, will focus on bug habitats and birdhouses, pollination and taking care of pests.

An “Art in the Garden” session from July 26 through July 29 focuses on painting, creating natural dyes and making art directly from the garden. Children also will write poems, sing songs, sculpt, make candles, and learn how to take pictures.

Students can learn about seeds, worms and garbage and garden care from Aug. 2 to Aug. 5 during a session titled “Garden Gurus: Gardening Know-how from A to Z.”

Finally, the “Garden Detectives” session from Aug. 9 to Aug. 12 will focus on using science smarts to solve a mystery.

Each four-day session costs $150 and runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday through Thursday of the week it is offered. All sessions are for children ages 5 to 10.

Limited scholarships for free day camp are available for Gilroy families who live in the Neighborhood Revitalization Strategy Area.

People who are interested can contact Gilroy Demonstration Garden to determine if they live within the area.

The garden, which officially opened last month, stands on Eigleberry Street between Sixth and Seventh streets. It is open to the public on Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m.
