Interim chief probation officer appointed
SAN JOSE – The Superior Court of Santa Clara County announced that Ann Clarke will serve as interim chief probation officer as of Dec. 29.
She will replace John Cavalli, who recently announced his retirement as chief probation officer to be effective on Dec. 28.
Clarke has served as administrative services manager in the Probation Department from 1985 until her retirement in 2002. In 1992, she was named acting probation chief, prior to the selection of the permanent officer. Clarke has agreed to come out of retirement in order to fill this position. She is expected to serve for several months until a permanent chief probation officer is found.
The county has taken heavy criticism since the alleged beatings of about two dozen young men since 1994 became public earlier this year. Some staff reportedly slammed boys’ heads against walls, broke bones or knocked inmates unconscious.
Now, voters will be asked on the March 2, 2004 ballot whether to switch oversight of the facility from the county’s Superior Court to its Board of Supervisors.
