Artist shares his journey

GILROY – Gavilan College Art Gallery presents “Francisco Franco: Educational Travels” through Oct. 31.

The exhibition “Francisco Franco: Educational Travels” chronicles the journey of an artist from California’s Central Valley, to Modesto Junior College, to the University of California, Berkeley, to the New York Academy of Art … and beyond. Works from each era are included to allow the viewer to experience the struggles and triumphs of a creative journey.

The Gavilan College Art Gallery is located in the Library building on the Gilroy campus, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd. Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday: 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday: 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. It’s closed Saturday and Sunday. Browse for baby

GILROY – Las Madres of Gilroy will hold its semi-annual garage sale fund raiser on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 3 and 4 from 8 a.m. to noon at 7675 Benassi Drive in Gilroy.

Parents with young children shouldn’t miss out on the chance to browse through hundreds of gently used baby care items, furniture, toys and baby, children’s and maternity clothing. A portion of the proceeds from the sale will benefit Las Madres, and additional merchandise collected will be donated to local children’s charities.

Las Madres, Inc. is a California nonprofit organization for the parents of infants, toddlers and preschool children. They coordinate play groups, field trips, moms’ nights out and charitable community services.

Round up funds for rodeo

GILROY – Chevy’s, 8440 Murray Ave., is hosting a fund raiser for the California High School Rodeo Association on Tuesday, Oct. 7, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Simply give your server your receipt, inform them of your intent to support the fund raiser and Chevy’s will donate 20 percent of the proceeds to the CHSRA.

All high school students attending public, private or home school in California are eligible to participate in the CHSRA. Representatives from the CHSRA will be available in the evening to answer any questions on how to become involved in sport. Details or reservations: Chevy’s at

Starting your own business

GILROY – Gavilan College Small Business Development is offering a workshop on Tuesday, Oct. 7, from noon to 2 p.m. at the Dry Creek Village Center, 8351 Church St., Building E.

The workshop provides an overview of marketing essentials, product selection, business goal setting, legal issues, licenses required, risk evaluation, bookkeeping, financing and management. The cost is $20. Pre-register at 847-0373.

For the sleuth in us all

MORGAN HILL – Easy Street Theatre Company will perform Agatha Christie’s “The Mouse Trap.” This is Agatha Christie’s most famous whodunit, and it is the longest running play in the history of Theatre, running continuously since 1957. The play is set in 1947. Seven strangers are holed up in an old English country manor during a horrible snow storm. One person gets murdered and everyone is suspect. It is up to a young detective to solve the crime and rattle a few cages in the process.

The play opens tonight at 8. Other performances are Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Oct. 3, 4, 9,10, and 11 at 8 p.m. Also on Oct. 4 and 11, matinees will be at 2 p.m. Performances are at the Morgan Hill Playhouse, 17000 Monterey Road, on the corner of Dunne and Monterey.

Symphony season opens

GILROY – South Valley Symphony will open its 30th concert season Saturday, Oct. 11, at 7:30 p.m. at the Gavilan College theater, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd. Music Director/Conductor Henry Mollicone has selected a program consisting of operatic arias by Verdi, Puccini and Mozart. Two featured vocalists, Karen McConachie, soprano, and Michael Morris, baritone, will join the orchestra in several operatic arias from the operas “Rigoletto,” “La Traviata,” “La Rondine” and more.

Individual tickets are priced at $12 adults, $10 seniors over 55, and $7 for students and are available at Snappy Photo, California Music Company and Porcella’s Music in Gilroy. Season tickets will be available at Gavilan College box office the day of performance at $60 for adults, $50 seniors and $35 students age 12 to 18. Celebrate history month

GILROY – Celebrate history month and fire prevention month with the city and historical society on Saturday, Oct. 4 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Gilroy Museum, 195 Fifth St. The museum will be showing an exhibit all month-long in honor of fire-prevention month.

On Saturday, Gilroy firefighters will demonstrate modern firefighting equipment on two fire engines in front of the museum on Fifth Street. The historical society’s 1923 engine will be on display, as well. The society will sell frozen lemonade and frozen rootbeer floats as a fund raiser for its newspaper microfilm project. Girl Scout camp out

GILROY – Bonfante Gardens is currently offering one or two night stays in the Bonfante Garden Grove for Girl Scout troops on Oct. 17 to 19 and Oct. 24 to 25. Facilities include maintained restrooms, covered picnic areas, lighted walkways and close parking. All guests will receive a catered lunch and dinner, special garden tour, educational packets with horticulture related material and complimentary admission to the park the next day. Rotary club golf tournament
