Children should be in booster seats
Gilroy – Parents are being reminded this week to buckle up their children in safety seats.
A recent study found that booster seats lower the risk of injury to children in crashes by 59 percent, compared to regular seat belts.
The use of booster seats for older children is being emphasized for those under 4-foot-9 during “National Child Passenger Safety Week,” which runs through Saturday.
The state Office of Traffic Safety and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration cite studies that show children ages 2 to 5 are four times more likely to suffer serious head injuries than those who are placed in booster seats.
During a crash, children shorter than 4-foot-9 can be hit in the neck or face by a shoulder belt, and across the stomach by a lap belt, without a booster seat.
The belts should fall across the chest and lap, as they do with adults.
