GILROY – Boy Scout Devin Collins is collecting items and sending them to the troops in Iraq through July 4 for his Eagle Project.
Help him complete his project while supporting our troops by donating items such as: hard candies, sun screen, CDs and CD players, toothbrushes and pastes, dental floss, drawing and writing supplies, energy bars, unscented soaps and lotions, Ziploc bags, powdered and sweetened drink mixes, Wet Wipes (Lever 2000 are preferred), bug spray (with less than 20 percent DEET), beef jerky, personal toiletries, fly swatters, gel deodorant, DVDs, hand sanitizers, lip balm, mending kits, eye and nose drops, sealed card and travel-sized games and letters of support.
Collections barrels are located at Gilroy City Hall, 7351 Rosanna St., open Mondays through Fridays, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and at the San Martin Country Park and Pumpkin Patch, located on Monterey Road.
Items will be shipped through the Red Cross: Operation Comfort and Care.

Support GHS classrooms
GILROY – The Gilroy High School Parent Club needs volunteers to work at the Garlic Festival and raise money that will go straight into classrooms, helping out hard-working teachers. Come and work, have a good time and earn money for a good cause. Hours worked at the festival equal money back to the Parent Club.

Make fun of work
GILROY – Pintello Comedy Theater, 8531 Church St., presents ‘Office Hours,’ directed by Marion Pintello, showing at 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, through July 3.
‘Office Hours’ is a comedy featuring five actors playing 17 parts in six different offices who are connected, but in very unexpected ways.

GILROY – The Kemetic Institute, Cultural Center and Museum, 7469 Forest St., continues its second ‘Juneteenth Celebration’ today. Join in for the Chili Cookout Competition and judge the best chili in Gilroy from 1 to 8 p.m.

Star on the stage
GILROY – South Valley Civic Theater will hold auditions for their upcoming production ‘Moon Over Buffalo,’ by Ken Ludwig and directed by Steve Spencer, June 19 with a 9:30 a.m. check-in for a 10 a.m. audition, and 1 p.m. check-in for a 1:30 p.m. audition.
Auditions will beheld at the SVCT warehouse behind Kelly Moore Paints on Monterey Road, just north of Leavesley Road.
‘Moon Over Buffalo’ is an adult comedy with four male roles, aged from the late 20’s to 60’s and four female roles, aged from the late 20’s to 80’s. Actors should prepare a one- to two-minute monologue.

Get inspired
GILROY – The Gilroy Writing Project hosts Nina Marie Martinez, author of ‘Caramba!’ a tale told in turns of the card.
Martinez will talk about publishing her first novel, vintage clothing and drawing inspiration from the south valley.
The event takes place on Saturday, June 19 at Gilroy Public Library, located at Sixth and Rosanna streets, at 2 p.m. All are welcome to attend.

Go fly a kite
GILROY – Experience the excitement of Kite Flying on Saturday, with the ‘Third Annual Family Kite Day’ at Pacheco State Park, in a big windy field. Watch the sky dance with clever and imaginative kites from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.
Everyone who flies a kite receives a souvenir Kite Day button. Other fun activities include a ‘Make Your Own Kite Free’ table, pie eating contests, bubble blowing contests and interesting tables sponsored by U.S. Fish and Wildlife, California Fish and Game, etc.
There will be trophy awards for ‘Best Kite Made by an Individual 15 and Under,’ ‘Best Kite Made by an Individual 16 and Over’ and ‘Best Kite Made by a Group.’
Families are encouraged to bring a kite, hats and/or sunscreen, drinking water and a picnic lunch.
The only fee is the $4 state park day use fee per car.
To reach Pacheco State Park, take Highway 152. Park is located 25 miles east of Gilroy and 22 miles west of Los Banos, at the top of historic Pacheco Pass. Turn south off of Highway 152 at the ‘Dinosaur Point’ exit, and then turn right, going through the park gate, following the kites down the dirt road into Pacheco State Park.
SM author signs books
GILROY – Barnes and Noble hosts children’s writer Karen Beaumont on Saturday, June 19 at 2 p.m., for the first author signing and reading in the new Gilroy store, located off Tenth Street.
The author of 10 children’s books, Beaumont is a local writer from San Martin.
She will read from her book ‘I Like Myself,’ which is an ode to self-acceptance and teaches kids that what matters most is what is inside. This event, and all author events at the store are free and open to the public.

Bring hiking shoes, layered clothing, water and sun protection.
