GILROY – The Gilroy High School Parent Club needs volunteers to work at the Garlic Festival and raise money that will go straight into classrooms, helping out hard-working teachers.
Come and work, have a good time and earn money for a good cause. Hours worked at the festival equal money back to the Parent Club.

Brunch for a battle
GILROY – During the month of July, J.R. Brewski’s, 8080 Santa Teresa Blvd., Suite 100, will donate a portion of its brunch proceeds to the American Cancer Society and help fight the battle against cancer.

See the Wizard
GILROY – Gavilan College Theater Arts’ Summer Theater Arts Repertory (STAR) 2004 presents ‘The Wizard of Oz’ at Gavilan College, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd., tonight at 7 p.m. and Saturday, July 17 at 3 and 7 p.m.
The event is produced by special arrangement with Tams Witmark Music Library. Adults are $12, seniors and students are $10 and kids under 12 are $8.

Barbecue for education
GILROY – The 30th annual ‘John Birch Society Barbecue and Auction’ will be held on Saturday, at The Patane Barn, 6650 Holsclaw Road. Proceeds will go toward scholarships for Robert Welch University’s American Heritage Youth Camp.

Cool camps for kids
GILROY – The Extreme Learning Center is now offering summer camps and tutoring services at Solarsano Middle School for grades K through 12. Extreme Learning offers the following summer camps: Reading/Writing Workshop, Math Workshop, SAT and College Prep, and California High School Exit Exam Prep.
Tutoring in all subjects and an ongoing Academic Support Program are also available at Solarsano.
Beginning Wednesday, the center will be operating in the Media Center at Solarsano Middle School.
Tutoring and additional camps are available at the center in Morgan Hill, including Robotics, Chess, Web Design, Animation, Crime Scene Investigation, Digital Scrapbooking, KidPix Digital Art and KidBiz Computer Applications.

GILROY – The Gilroy Economic Development Corporation in conjunction with the Silicon Valley Workforce Investment Network, Career Advancement Solutions and Gavilan College Small Business Development Center present ‘Workplace Skills in a Retail Environment’ at the Gavilan College SBDC office in the Dry Creek Village Center, 8351 Church St., Building E, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 31.
This free eight-hour training course will help students learn the basics of working in retail. The instructor will review working in a retail environment, principles of customer service, work attitudes and ethics, business communication, dealing with difficult people, handling money, cashiering and scanning practices. GILROY – Residents can now call the ‘Information Express,’ a 24-hour telephone access system that connects callers to general city information.
The system allows callers to access information on subjects from building and construction to utilities. A ‘fax on demand’ feature also allows residents to be faxed forms such as building permits and water and sewer rates.
